SELECTED FLOWERS
Inspired by the beautiful craft of Japanese kanzashi flowers, I became enamored with the process of transforming fabric into carefully designed objects that echo the natural world—and take some fanciful turns. As I discovered that a tiny slip of paper could be tucked into a certain petal design, an even bigger world of possibilities emerged for these flowers. Perhaps they could offer something more to the recipient: an uplifting personal message for everyday enjoyment or to mark special life events: birthdays, bridal occasions, anniversaries, recognitions, or celebrations.
The fabrics I use—satin, organza, silk, linen, cotton, and more—are as diverse as what I find to repurpose: cut hems from formal gowns, waste from clothing alterations, and other fabric items whose first life has come to an end. Some styles incorporate fabric I’ve dyed myself. I may use beads, buttons, or upcycled, fabric-covered plastic discs to create centers. Finished with a felt backing and hybrid pin-clip, the flowers can be attached to numerous surfaces, including clothing, accessories, hair, or a wall-mounted structure. With a handwritten note tucked into the petals by the recipient or gift-giver, I hope the flowers bring the fun element of a hidden message reminiscent of a fortune cookie—but with the deeper personal relevance of a mantra, wish, encouragement, special news, or expression of love.
The flower designs are driven by the fabrics and the vibe I can envision for them—elegant and formal, bright and playful, or subdued and earthy. After sourcing fabric and steam cleaning/pressing, I cut, sew, and adhere the layers, transforming the disparate elements into small-batch designs and unique pieces that I hope bring beauty and inspiration to the recipient.
I can create flowers on a custom basis, to coordinate with specific attire; coordinate sibling, parent-child, or group designs; create a larger size wall or pillow-mount backing for baby, birthday, bridal, anniversary, etc. I can also incorporate fabric with special meaning from a loved one.
